Earning its name as the craziest Spanish festival, La Tomatina allows thousands of individuals to gather in the town of Bunol, Spain and throw tomatoes at each other. Though extremely messy, the event is significant in representing the playful and enjoyable nature of the locals. This massive food fight takes place every year on the last Wednesday of August, and people from around the world unite in the small town of Bunol, just 30 kilometers inland from Valencia to embrace their lighthearted spirit. La Tomatina is a part of the week-long festivities that take place in Spain to honor San Luis Beltran, a well-known Spanish Dominican missionary.

Over 100 metric tons of overripe tomatoes are thrown around during La Tomatina⎯equivalent to the weight of about 20 elephants standing next to each other. People are not only allowed, but are encouraged to participate in this unique event with the purpose of having fun. The food fight usually lasts for two hours, and participants strive to make every single second count as the full intention of this event is to simply entertain.

It is believed that La Tomatina began in the mid-20th century as a spontaneous food fight amidst a group of friends, which is counteracted by the belief that it might have started out as a local dispute. Either way, this tomato-throwing tradition eventually
gained popularity due to the spread of the word throughout the second half of the 20th century. Many other individuals over the years have been encouraged to join the food fight by witnessing and recognizing how much the locals adore the gathering.

La Tomatina has grown from a playful food fight with humble beginnings to a vast social event, gathering individuals from all over the globe to one town to make memories. It is more than just a festival; it is a celebration of Spanish culture and community.
