Did you know that Cinco de Mayo is actually celebrated in The U.S. more than in Mexico? Cinco de Mayo is a popular celebration that recognizes the Mexican Army’s victory over the French during the “Battle of Puebla” on May 5, 1862. There are many parades that take place consisting of music, food, dance, and colorful displays of Mexican Culture. Not only is it a party, but a huge appreciation day of the soldiers who fought in the Mexico and France War.
In early 1861, France invaded Mexico as an attempt to gain control and expand the French Empire into the Americans. However, Mexico refused to surrender. So instead, Mexico’s Army led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, fought against the French Army, led by Charles Latrille de Lorencez in the Battle of Puebla. Even though the French had a greater advantage with their advanced technology, more soldiers, and greater load of weapons, Mexico still ended up winning and finally seeked their independence. After 5 years of constant fighting, Mexico created history by winning the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862 which is now celebrated on “Cinco de Mayo”.
The Victory of the Battle of Puebla brought identity and pride to the Mexican people as they saw it as representation of their unity and strength as a whole. Mexico came together to honor their culture and unity by bringing out new traditions. In the United States, many Americans have also learned and practiced these traditions to embrace and celebrate the victory of Mexico.
Many traditions during Cinco de Mayo consist of dancing, traditional foods, parades, and ceremonies honoring the day. Many people celebrate this holiday by making Mexican-cuisine foods like guacamole, quesadillas, mexican corn, and pico de gallo. For Cinco de Mayo, Mexicans often wear colorful, bright clothing, floral patterns, and ruffles.
Cinco de Mayo is not just a fun party, but more importantly, marks the meaningful holiday of heritage, history, and culture. It represents unity and independence of the country of Mexico as well as bravery and courage through the soldiers who fought throughout the years. With the help of fun activities, cultural food, and important practices, many people from across North America look forward to celebrating this meaningful holiday.
