On March 20th 2025 president Donald Trump signed an executive order to close the department of education in an attempt to give the states control and authority over education in the United States. The U.S. department of education was established on May 4th, 1980. The goal of the organization is to strengthen the government’s responsibilities to provide equal rights to education for everybody, improve the quality of education across all states and local school systems, have the public more involved in the federal education system, sharing information and using research in order to improve the usefulness of education, the management and coordination of federal education programs and activities as well as increasing accountability to the government for the federal education system.
Trump sees the U.S. department of education as wasteful and polluted by liberal ideologies. He believes the department of education is the reason for America’s poor academic performance and believes the states will do a better job at running the education system. The Institute of Educational Sciences has had major cuts and the workforce has been decreasing. With the close of the department of education will turn all educational decisions and authority to the states rather than the department of education. The Trump administration believes it is a waste of money and that the states will not only be more economically practical but more effective overall.
The dismantling of the department of education will decrease the amount of resources and programs for more vulnerable students such as low income students and disabled students and the quality of education will likely decline because most of the beneficial programs the department of education has to offer will be gone such as grants for teacher preparation, and programs focused on diverse students and special education. If the states take over education then it would be more budget efficient and considering the federal education system spends $2.7 billion dollars annually however with the states control the department of education programs would be removed. The states could reallocate money to teachers and technology by removing these programs that the department has to offer.
