April and May: Sports in Latin America and Spain

April and May have had their fair share of sports stories from Latin America and Spain, from incredible upsets to significant victories.

April

  • Bolivian soccer team Club Bolivar stunned Brazilian giants Palmieras in the Conmebol Libertadores (South America’s group stage with a 3-1 win. This is a massive surprise since Palmieras won the competition as recently as the 2020-2021 season. Highlights from the game can be viewed at www.youtube.com/watch?v=11X6RP3rlNs.
  • The most recent edition of the El Clasico, the famous Spanish Derby between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, ended with a convincing 4-0 win for Real Madrid, with Frenchman Karim Benzema scoring three and Brazilian Vinicius Jr. scoring one. This victory puts Real Madrid in the final of the Copa Del Rey, one of Spain’s domestic cups. They will face FC Osasuna on May 6th.
  • Spanish side FC Osasuna has reached the final of the Copa del Rey for the first time since 2005, beating out fellow Spanish sides Real Betis, Sevilla, and Athletic Club De Bilbao, a new revelation for the Spanish side who currently sit in 8th in the LaLiga.
  • Real Madrid beat FC Osasuna in the Copa Del Rey Final 2-1. This doesn’t come as much of a surprise to the Madrid-based side, who add yet another trophy to their existing 68. 
  • Spanish side Villareal returned from down 2-1 to win 3-2 against Real Madrid. This victory further widened FC Barcelona’s lead at the top of the LaLiga table.
  • Argentinian footballer Lionel Messi could be returning to the Spanish LaLiga next season. The well-known winger is linked with a move away from French club Paris Saint Germain. Messi wants to join FC Barcelona, but this move would be financially challenging for the Barcelona-based club.
  • Spanish side Real Madrid advanced to the semifinal of the UEFA Champions League, beating English side Chelsea 4-0 on aggregate. This win is a bit expected due to Chelsea’s poor season, sitting 11th in the English Premier League.
  • Argentinian striker Taty Castellanos stunned Real Madrid by scoring four goals against the Madrid side. Castellanos, currently on loan at Girona FC from NYCFC in the MLS, ended Real Madrid’s hopes of winning LaLiga, effectively confirming FC Barcelona as this season’s LaLiga winners.
  • LaLiga, the Spanish first division, will undergo a rebrand starting next season. The league will change its logo and be renamed the “LaLiga EA Sports FC” following a recent sponsorship deal with Electronic Arts, the creators of popular sports games such as EA Sports FC (formerly known as FIFA, but renamed due to sponsorship reasons) and Madden.

May

  • Lionel Messi scored in a 1-3 loss for PSG against Lorient, meaning Messi now has 15 goals for the French club.
  • Uruguayan Matias Viña scored in AFC Bournemouth’s 3-1 loss to Chelsea FC in the English Premier League. It was Viña’s first goal for Bournemouth since joining the club in the January Transfer Window.
  • According to Transfermarket.com, Argentinian Manchester United player Alejandro Garnacho now ranks as the most valuable U18 player from South America with a market value of $25 million, overtaking Brazilian player Endrick.
  • Arginine International and Juventus winger Angel Di Maria is close to signing a contract extension with the Italian club.
  • Argentina star Lionel Messi is rumored to be leaving French Side PSG after he took a trip to Saudi Arabia without informing anyone at the club, putting further tension between Messi and the Paris-based club. Possible destinations for Messi include Manchester City, FC Barcelona, or even Saudi club Al Hilal. 
  • Spanish Coach Pep Guardiola led Manchester City to their 3rd straight English Premier League title following Arsenal FC’s loss. 
  • Spanish side FC Barcelona secured this season’s La Liga title with a 4-2 win over city rivals Espanyol, the club’s first title since 2019. 
  • Spanish side Real Madrid played poorly and lost 4-0 to Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League, confirming their elimination from this year’s competition. This means Manchester City, coached by Spanish coach Pep Guardiola, will face Inter Milan in the Champions League Final. 
  • Uruguayan Footballing Legend Diego Forlan turned 44 on May 19th. In his career, he won many trophies, including league titles in England and Uruguay and Copa America with Uruguay.
  • Due to Manchester City and Inter Milan advancing to the Champions League Final, it is guaranteed that an Argentine (Inter’s Lautoro Martinez or Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez) will join the list of just 15 players to win the world cup and champions league in the same season.
  • The Uruguay National Team have appointed former Leeds United coach Marco Bielsa as their new manager. Bielsa will replace the outgoing Diego Alonso, fired after Uruguay’s poor performance at the 2022 World Cup.
  • Uruguayan International Federico Valverde made his 200th appearance for Real Madrid in their 1-0 win over Getafe, putting Valverde just 27 games away from breaking the record for most appearances by an Uruguayan player for the club.
  • Argentina’s U20 team won all three group-stage games in the U20 World Cup, hosted in Argentina. The host nation scored ten goals and only conceded one in the group stage of the tournament. 
  • Argentina’s U20 team couldn’t keep up their success from the group stage of the U20 World Cup as they lost in the round of 16 to Nigeria with a score of 2-0. Fellow South American nation Ecuador was also eliminated from the tournament with a 3-2 loss to South Korea. 
  • The United States U20 team comfortably cruised their way to the U20 World Cup Quarterfinals with wins over Ecuador, Fiji, Slovakia, and New Zealand. They will face the Uruguay U20 team in the quarterfinals. 
  • Colombia’s U20 team comfortably beat Slovakia 5-1 to advance to the U20 World Cup Quarterfinals, where they will face Italy.
