Comuna 13 is a place in Medellin, Columbia, where this one time dangerous part of the city has transformed to one of colorful artistic expression and now considered the very center of cultural and community pride. For a long time in history, this place was filled with violence. However, over the last few decades, it had been symbolic as a place of resistance against the arts. Events invite changes and include the annual Feria de las Flores, a show displaying Comuna 13 and the richness in culture around it. The Feria de las Flores started in 1957 and grew into one of the most important cultural festivals in Colombia.
Since this festival’s beginning every August, a variety of adaptations have taken place in Medellin, developing it into a very important symbolism of renovation and pride in the culture for this city. Parades, music, and street dances fill up the Comuna 13 with the transition to peace that it has taken away from conflict during the festival. It is the celebration of the integration of Medellín with traditional culture through urban art, including the famous parade of silleteros with huge, complex-designed flower bunches transported on the bearers’ backs. These flowers are a symbol of people deeply connected with that land. During the last few years, Comuna 13 has embraced street art as an amazing tool for social change.
It was a place painted by murals of stories from past struggles to hopeful futures, having made many of them tourist attractions. People flocked worldwide to see this piece of work here. Feria de las Flores gives them the opportunity to have this experience since the neighborhood has changed. Today, Comuna Trece stands for the power of endurance and change of circumstance. The Feria de las Flores was but one way that the people in Comuna 13 have been able to recapture meaning in culture through art and a sense of community. Their neighborhoods have succeeded in inspiring stories for many underprivileged communities worldwide that, under harsh circumstances, hope and creativity can make positive change.
