What does dance really mean to you? If you are like most people in the United States, chances are you are not months into practice for the world’s largest tango festival. But for many, this dance style is love, life and everything in between. In fact some children start as young as 2 years old in the world of Tango competitions. With this information in tow, the question remains: how much of an impact can a single dance style really have?

Introduction

Tango is more than a simple dance form—it is an expression of emotion, culture, and history. Originating in the late 1880’s, tango actually started out as a movement developed by the working-class neighborhoods of Buenos Aires and Montevideo. Tango later evolved as a unique blend of African, European, and indigenous influences that has remained incredibly impactful to today’s world of dance. As of now, it has been deemed Argentina’s greatest contribution to global culture and tradition.

So how exactly does this dance style get all of its credit? Other than its natural diffusion throughout time and various cultures, there are actual events that facilitate these activities as well!

About the Event

The International Tango Festival is an annual event that takes place in Tango’s birthplace, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Producers, musicians, artists, and dancers alike attend this week-long event, where the world of Tango is expressed and appreciated. If you were to go for yourself, you would most likely come across a large line of vendors, street performers and entertainers, and other additions that resemble the festivals in the United States. This event in particular however, has dance lessons, live performances and music, and is generally an all-inclusive celebration of
Argentinian culture.

The Competition

The Tango World Cup is the official and incredibly competitive center of the festival, where tango dancers from all around the world come to compete for awards and prize money. The competitors are separated into two categories:

Tango de Pista (Salon Tango): This category is for competitors who want to express the more traditional and social style of tango, where dancers emphasize the passion and connection between themselves and their partners.

Tango Escenario (Stage Tango): This category of tango highlights a more theatrical side of this style. This style of dance is characterized by its dramatic storytelling and strong movements, such as lifts and spins.

Importance

Beyond showing off the unique style and impressive technique the dance of Tango brings to the creative world, it is also a representative and symbol of an unforgettable tradition and irreplaceable part of Argentine culture. It also reminds its people of the hardships and pressure certain communities faced, and the beauty and love that difficulties can bring.
