The election of 2024 marked the beginning of life-changing events that would not only affect the present population, but would dismantle the efforts of generational struggle. With the inauguration of President Donald Trump, augmented uneasiness settled in homes of immigrants all across the United States. With the prospect of mass deportation, the question lingers; do the American principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness apply to all?
The overall objective in the pursuit of mass deportation is to rid America of proclaimed foreign criminals. On January 22, 2025, ICE documented a total of 308 arrests; in contrast to the average 282 migrants per day in the year of 2024. Donald Trump has initiated the process, by first removing a restriction policy that prohibited Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents from arresting undocumented people in areas of vulnerability- houses of worship, schools, hospitals, domestic violence shelters, and disaster relief centers. Additionally, the ´Remain in Mexico´ policy was reinstated, which placed individuals seeking asylum in Mexico until their date to appear before court. This has become a source of debate and controversy between the Mexican and American government as the terms for either executive order were not discussed beforehand. To carry out the policies, 1,500 additional troops were sent to the southern border, a 60% increase in active-duty ground forces. The units will carry out the deportation of 5,000 individuals, a majority who remain in El Paso and will be driven to ´sister city´ Juarez.
The acts carried out have resulted in collapse across the border, affecting citizens from both worlds. Migrants who had been patiently waiting at the frontier for years on end in hopes of a better life were demoralized with the disabling of the app ´CBP One´. An application that held the aspirations of a future with the promise of legal appointments that would eventually authorize the transition from one country to the United States. Jesus Quevedo, an immigrant from Venezuela, expresses fear of his sweat and tears turned meaningless. The stories of extortion and kidnapping becoming too threatening to act otherwise.
The uncertainty of what is to come has plagued the minds of millions of immigrants around the nation. The dread of packing belongings and an entire life lived into a singular orange bag and carried miles from the place fought to belong in, is a heartbreaking experience. In anticipation of the surge of migrants, Mexico has begun to prepare futile facilities to house displaced individuals. Soccer fields, empty lots, and gymnasiums brimmed with metal frames and ghastly tents are deemed adequate enough to become the new homes of millions.

Con la inauguración del presidente Donald Trump, una neblina de ansiedad llenó cada hogar de inmigrantes en los Estados Unidos. Ante la perspectiva de una deportación masiva, la pregunta persiste; ¿Se aplica a todos los principios estadounidenses de vida, libertad y la búsqueda de la felicidad?
El objetivo de la deportación masiva se describe en términos de liberar el Estados Unidos de criminales extranjeros.
