What Happened?
The Capitol Riots were when supporters of President Donald Trump stormed into the Capitol Building to countermand the defeat of their President in the 2020 Election. They broke into the Capitol Building and vandalized and looted many offices of Democratic politicians, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. From a great majority of the United State’s perspective, it was “a coup attempt” (POLITICO).
Why Did It Happen?
There are many different events that could’ve impacted this occurrence, but the main one started at President Trump’s rally at the White House. He told his supporters “to walk down to the Capitol” and “cheer on [the] brave senators, and congressmen and women” (President Donald Trump). But when it influenced this violent event was when he said “we’re probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them because you’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength, and you have to be strong” (President Donald Trump). Due to these directions, on a fine Wednesday morning, the supporters of President Donald Trump came into the Capitol building and “show[ed] strength” towards many Democratic members inside.
Problematic Behavior
Although the action the rioters portrayed was problematic enough, there were many other details that would’ve gotten them “cancelled” on the internet. Many of them were seen wearing Anti-Semetic propaganda, such as shirts with the symbols “6MWE”, or six million weren’t enough, meaning the six million Jews killed during the Holocaust wasn’t enough, and shirts with the words “Camp Auschwitz: Work Brings Freedom”, which describes one of the deadliest concentration camps during Nazi Germany.
Many also compared this event to the Black Lives Matter protests that occurred in mid-2020, for the death of George Floyd. They noticed that the police did, what was taken as, the bare minimum to these rioters, however, to the Black Lives Matter protesters, they shot tear-gas towards them, seen in this TikTok:
